Planting Bush Tucker, Paracombe Primary School
The learning unit was focused on soils and how plants grow in suitable places, acknowledging the relationship with our First Nations and their use of Indigenous plants.
The Year 5/6 students at Paracombe Primary School were excited to plant out their bush tucker garden with local, suitable plants to enhance their school, increase habitat for native birds, insects and other invertebrates as well as grow plants they can experiment with in their kitchen/culinary classes.

The students were interested in how these plants were used historically and were keen to understand each plants traditional use. Some students even tried eating the succulent leaves of the native Pigface, Carpobrotus rossi, also known as Karkalla – “tastes very salty”.
The students loved the opportunity to get their hands dirty and were very engaged in careful planting to ensure each plant will grow successfully.
